It started as a shaped dig in bare ground, held by curved shuttering, with a concrete footing and steel set around the edge.
The deck frame went in on concrete pads beside the water, with the timber bridge alongside. Slate edging, a stone waterfall and the deck boards followed, and the water went in.
View the projectThe old deck had rotted through, so it came up completely, frame and all, down to the ground underneath.
A new frame went in, set out around the house and levelled on packers. The new boards, edging and steps followed, and the whole deck and patio were washed down at the end.
View the projectThe stone was sound, but years of weather had left it grey, with weeds and dirt growing in the open joints.
The patio was washed down and the joints filled again in a clean, even line. The colour of the stone came back without replacing a single slab.
View the projectThe stone bed was spread and screeded first, with the levels checked by laser and straight edge before any slab went down.
The slabs were then laid across the whole area, up to the doors and the retaining walls, and finished with a plate compactor.
View the projectBoards were fixed down across the whole roof first, and the upstands around the edge were prepared with them.
The waterproof layers went on next, with the seams sealed, up the walls and around the window sills. The grey top coat was rolled on last.
View the projectThe room was stripped back to the old walls, with the ground underneath levelled and a pipe set in place.
Steel mesh went down across the whole room. The new concrete floor was then poured over it and smoothed out.
View the projectThe balcony surface was cracked and patched, and water was sitting on it.
A new dark waterproof coating now covers the whole balcony, along the edges and around the drain.
View the projectThe terrace was bare, patched concrete with a stone border along the doors.
It is now finished with large pale tiles, in straight lines right up to the doors and the glass balustrade.
